Tidal Pools wrap up
Big day- we went into this day seriously undermanned. We had 5 of our top children swimmers out with sporting clashes or injuries.
We also had a bunch of new children who had not competed in this type of competition before. Still on the bus trip to the pool there was no sign of negativity on the other hand a lot of enthusiasm and the Spit Club spirit was well and truly on deck.
I am very proud of this bunch of young people. Not only did they win the Junior Cup which basically is a points culmination of all races 16 years and under they did it with a smile and a great attitude.
There were a lot of races and as the day wore on the temperature dropped and the conditions were not that pleasant. Still no one complained and even in some cases where the kids had to back up with another race within minutes of finishing they just handled the pressure.
Every one of these children are champions! There were also a bunch of relays and within that more than one team within a race. Everyone contributed as each finisher scored a point for us. So each and every one of these kids should be very happy with themselves.
There was another big trophy on the day in which there is a 16 person relay with 2 people from each age group. This is a blue chip event and the other teams were looking very serious at the start. With half of the laps swum we were losing by more than a lap ( that is a lot in terms of a 16 lap race) anyway to cut a long story short coming into the last lap we were still 20 metres behind but with one of our juniors swimming the last lap we came home and won by a body length. It dosen’t get any better than that!
There are too many stars to mention but I do want to mention one person. Little Pippa Harrison. Pippa competed in the 6 and under category. We did not have any other swimmers in this age group so Pippa had to swim all the events herself including the butterfly. Pippa just nailed in and did it with a smile. A great example of the Spit club Spirit!
So in summary we walked away with 2 of the 4 trophies on offer and I think all the parents would agree that the children being our champions is more important than anything else.
I just want to thank all the parents that helped run the day. It is a tough job coordinating the swimmers and the relays are a nightmare in terms of getting the right people at the right end of the pool.
Special mention to Peta Daniel who took the brunt of the job ably backed up by Anastasia Clarke and Rebecca Rudyard. Thank you everyone!
After a very fun bus trip back to the clubhouse, we still managed to keep up the spit club spirit with a BBQ. (thank you Jack Daniel for being the chef) The kids had a ball playing on the sand and in the water while the parents had a well deserved refreshment or 2.
